Frequently Asked Questions about Speeding Tickets in Alberta
Is Fighting a Speeding Ticket in Alberta Expensive?
Not compared to doing nothing. As stated above, simply paying a ticket can be the most expensive option, once you factor in how it affects your insurance premiums. Hiring We Defend to defend a speeding ticket is often the most cost-effective option in the long run for many of our clients.
Why Should I Fight a Speeding Ticket?
Fighting a ticket isn’t just about whether you’re found guilty—it can also reduce the number of demerit points that go on your license, or eliminate them completely if you fight the ticket successfully. Appealing your speeding ticket can also prevent your insurance from increasing. Simply paying a speeding ticket can raise your insurance rates.
How Much Is a Speeding Ticket in Alberta?
From $105 at 1 km/h over to $744 at 50 km/h over, including the 20% Victims of Crime surcharge. Amounts double where construction workers or emergency responders are present. At 51 km/h or more over there is no set fine — the court decides. See the table above, or the full schedule on alberta.ca.
How Many Demerits Is a Speeding Ticket in Alberta?
Two points up to 15 km/h over, three from 16 to 30, four from 31 to 50, and six at 51 or more. They attach to your record on conviction, not on the date you received the ticket.
Why Choose We Defend?
We Defend has an excellent track record of helping Alberta drivers fight speeding tickets, along with other traffic tickets and driving charges. We also offer free consultations and 365 day a year service 24/7, so you can talk to one of our professionals quickly and get the help you need as soon as you need it.
How Long Do I Have to Respond to a Speeding Ticket?
The deadline is printed on your ticket. Most Alberta speeding tickets allow roughly 30 days from issue, but work from the date on your own ticket rather than a general rule. Missing it usually means a conviction is entered in your absence, and that is harder to undo than responding on time.
Does a Speeding Ticket Affect my Insurance?
Insurers treat convictions differently depending on the conviction, your driving history and their own underwriting rules. An increase is possible but not automatic in every case. Your insurer or broker can tell you how they treat a specific conviction.
Do I Have to Go to Court Myself?
For most speeding matters, no — we can appear on your behalf. At 51 km/h or more over the speed limit, an appearance is mandatory, and we’ll explain what that involves during your initial review.
