Types of Traffic Tickets

Traffic offences in Alberta carry between 2 and 7 demerit points, set by regulation. How many your ticket carries is the first thing to establish, because it determines what a conviction actually costs you.

6-7 Demerit Points

  • Failing to remain at the scene
  • Careless driving
  • Racing
  • Failing to stop for a school bus

4-5 Demerit Points

  • Failing to stop for a peace officer
  • Following too close
  • Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk
  • Passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk

3 Demerit Points

    • Failing to stop at a stop sign or red light
    • Distracted driving
    • Stunting
    • Driving left of centre
    • Failing to yield at an intersection

2 Demerit Points

  • Unsafe lane change
  • Failing to signal
  • Improper turns and U-turns
  • Improper backing
  • Failing to obey a traffic control device

These are the offences we see most often. See the full list of Alberta offences and the demerit points each carries →

How We Handle Your Traffic Ticket in Alberta

1. You Send the Ticket

Photograph every page, including the back, and note the response deadline.

2. Free Consultation

We confirm the alleged offence, the demerit points it carries and the deadline, then set out which routes are actually available.

3. You Decide.

We explain the proposed work and the fee before you commit. See our rates.

4. We File

Disclosure requested from the Crown, not-guilty plea entered on your behalf.

5. We Review the Evidence

Officer’s notes, photographs, video, sightlines and any device records in the disclosure.

6. We Attend Court

For most traffic matters, you won’t need to appear.

Who Reviews Your Ticket? Our team includes a former Justice of the Peace and a former police officer, alongside traffic defence agents with decades of Alberta experience. Alberta traffic trials are usually heard by a Justice of the Peace sitting as a Traffic Commissioner. Melissa Lucy did that job for over a decade. Will De Vadder served as a police officer and knows how the observations and notes behind a ticket are produced.

Frequently Asked Questions about Traffic Tickets

Is Fighting a Traffic Ticket Expensive?

Fighting a traffic ticket in court is often cheaper in the long run than simply paying it. Many of our clients come to We Defend Tickets because they realize that appealing their ticket is the most cost-effective option and trust us to do it effectively.

Why Should I Fight a Traffic Ticket?

Fighting a traffic ticket is the best way to prevent it from affecting your insurance premiums. Simply paying the ticket might seem like the easiest option—but even tickets without hefty fines can drive your insurance rates up considerably.

Fighting the ticket gives you (and us) an opportunity to reduce or eliminate your penalties. This can save you money on fines, reduce the number of demerits on your license, and limit the amount your premiums will rise.

How Long Do I Have to Respond to a Traffic Ticket in Alberta?

The deadline is printed on your ticket. Most Alberta violation tickets allow roughly 30 days from issue, but work from the date on your own ticket rather than a general rule. Missing it usually means a conviction is entered in your absence, and that is harder to undo than responding on time.

When Do Demerit Points Go on My Record?

On the conviction date — which is the date you pay the ticket, are found guilty in court, or are convicted in your absence. It is not the date you received the ticket. The points then stay on your record for two years from that date.

Why Choose We Defend?

We Defend has an excellent track record of helping Alberta drivers fight a wide variety of traffic tickets and driving charges. We also offer free consultations and 365-day-a-year service from 24/7, so you can talk to one of our professionals quickly and get the help you need as soon as you need it.

Do I Have to Go to Court Myself?

For most traffic matters, no — we can appear on your behalf. Some charges, including careless driving, carry a mandatory court appearance. We’ll tell you which applies during the initial review.

How Many Demerit Points Before I Lose My License?

Fifteen points within a two-year period for a fully licensed driver, or eight for a Graduated Driver’s Licence holder. You receive a cautionary notice before that — at 8 points for full licences, 4 for GDL. More on how the thresholds work.

Send Us Your Ticket

Every Alberta ticket carries a response deadline printed on it. Send us a photograph of every page—including the back and any court date—and we'll review it for free.

Testimonials

I had a great experience with Stewart and Will, thank you so much! Stewart was very knowledgeable and made me feel very comfortable in my first phone call, while other companies brushed me aside and charged twice the price. I am very grateful that everything was explained to me, and I was treated with respect no matter how many questions I had. In the end, my ticket was withdrawn, and I'm so incredibly grateful that using Wedefendtickets helped me navigate through this stressful situation with ease. 100% would use them again and recommend to anyone! - Robyn

Stewart, Melissa and Derek are a great team of ticket defenders. In my initial conversation with Stewart he set my mind at ease by letting me know what the plan would be in defending my ticket. However, when it seemed like the crown prosecutor might want the charges kept even without a offer to reduce it, Derek stepped in and saved the day for me. THANK YOU all! I will definitely highly recommend your team to anyone who needs help with defending their ticket. - Fredrick

Great service and communication throughout the whole process. I felt at ease, and I had full trust in Stewart. He brought back amazing results, and I had 2 tickets withdrawn for good! Can't recommend him enough! - Melinda

If 6 STARS were an option, We Defend Tickets would easily be in that category. I was facing 3 tickets with 9 points associated with these charges. We Defend Tickets took the time to understand my situation and provided clear details regarding my options; best and worst-case scenarios. I left the decision in Stewart's hands to move forward based on his expertise/ thoughts, and so happy I did... Big thanks for all your work in having the fines reduced and more so, not having any points deducted.

Money well spent and I would recommend your services to all my family, friends and colleagues.

Thank you again and until my next ticket... wishing you well. - Brenda

Stewart is amazing, I would use a better word, if there were.

I remember being scared after the whole incident with the Police and I can't be more grateful he was the one I contacted.

He was very calm, didn't judge me or pass any blame. He was quite affordable. Reassured me He was going to do his best.....went ahead and cleared me, even when some of the tickets were postponed another year due to covid. He waited the whole year and still got me cleared of everything.

No demerits, no records, Nothing. I most especially loved when he said "You're good to go, MY FRIEND" - Omolabake
